I need to move a 6 foot dogwood tree about a mile from where i live to my new home. Is fall an OK time to move a tree?
What is the best way to move it so I don't kill it?

1) Dig a hole in which you will transplant it. Make it big enough.
2) Dig out the tree, WITH a big ball of dirt around it.
Make sure you get a lot of the roots in the ball.
3) Put some topsoil in the bottom of the hole you dug at your new home. It is best if that hole is 6 inches wider on each side than the ball of dirt around the tree.
4) Do not plant the tree any deeper than it was at the old location
5) Fill the hole with dirt around the tree and soak it so the dirt settles, and there are no air pockets.
6) Fill the hole the rest of the way and tamp the dirt so the rest of the air pockets are removed and you have a "saucer" around the tree.
7) Soak the tree 2-3 times a week till the soil freezes. Trees and shrubs should "freeze wet" every winter.

Good Luck.

You want to make sure that you dig a big enough soil area around the tree as not to shock the roots too much and wrap the roots with the soil in a burlap bag to keep them warm during transportation, then make sure the new hole in large enough to get all the soil around the roots in too, then cover it and water some, just enough to dampen not soak it. Good luck.
