A wire coathanger twisted in and wrenched roughly out should do the trick. If it kills it then your worries are over anyway!!

My red ear slider loves being in his aquarium with his head above the water....but when I bring him out he is pretty shy and keeps his head tucked in..he also sits on his basking rock with his head up..he is just afraid, and the more you try to push him to be social, the more frightened he will become.
Try putting him close to you, with a piece of shrimp, or other favorite food in your hand...don't move, sooner or later..maybe even an hour his head will come out, and hopefully before long he will learn that you are a food source for him..not the enemy!

anyway, according to a film i saw once (the truth about cats and dogs, i think it was called), you put on a disposable rubber glove and shove your finger up its rectum. that will make the head pop out.

poke him in the butt. sounds silly yes, but stick a surgical clove on, and poke him in the butt. it should get him to stick his head out. but remember he might draw it back in also. if he's refusing for days at a time to bring out his head, you might check with your vet. that could be a sign of illness.

get a water bottle spray it with it he should come out that way that's what i did and it worked. GOOD LUCK
