What considerations do you have when you try to understand the meaning of an artwork?

There is an old saying, 'I don't know art, but I know what I like.'
That is the basis of most interpretations, be it art, poetry etc. What does it mean to YOU?! There is no way to know what the artist had in mind when he created the work, because interpretation is what you see and feel, not a psychic experience.

1. Wear: little black dress. cocktail dress. Heels. 2. Forks: use all knives, forks & spoons from the outside in. The one furthest away from the plate or bowl is the one to use first. Hint: Take just a second and watch someone else at the table who seems to know what they are doing. Pick up the fork that person picks up. 3. What to say: It's always good to ask people about themselves - we all love to talk about ourselves. Act interested in the answers. (You will not be required to run the conversation - that's the host's and hostess' duty.) 4. Bring a hostess gift. Bottle of wine, something good from a bakery. The hostess gift is given to the hostess and is to be used by the hostess at a later time, not that evening. 5. When leaving, find hostess, thank her for lovely evening and let her know you are departing. 6. Next day, HANDWRITE and MAIL a short little thank you note. No more than a line or two.

I looked at your example of Mona Lisa and what I saw was deep rich colors. The picture is faded but Mona Lisa stands out and is more so clear. I hope this helps you. Blessings
