I own a music venue.... and my advice it to keep playing. Get as much exposure if possible. Try to get gigs opening for big bands. Become friends with the owners of the club. Play lots of free events.... these are usually charities and you will add to your following b/c the people who attend will remember you. Be different. Make sure your sound....is not one that is already out there. Add an interesting instrument.... I am not saying go ska and add horns.... but something different. A record labels big peeve is language....even if it is punk - tone it down. Listen to a lot of punk that is already on a label and figure out what they did that was different. Sometimes it is being in the right place at the right time. Make sure the spokesperson for your band has a positive attitude and does not argue with club owners. Club oweners can be very helpful with contracts!!! I know many people that work for labels and I give them suggestions all the time for local bands. Play. Be positive.... put your heart and soul into it..... If you are getting bored now..... what lays ahead when you get a contract and have to play the same songs over and over.... Just something to think about..... try to rid the band of the boredom.... maybe even play in a park..... or on the street..... have lots of songs that people can relate to and make sure the vocals are easy to understand and are not drowned out by the music. Have a line that is "catchy" or a "catch phrase" that people pick up. Be careful in your choice for the name of your band.... stay away from vulgar names.... no one wants to sign a band they are embarassed to say the name of in a business situation. These are all things I had discussed with agents and labels. Most of all... get your numbers up.... promote your shows like crazy and get a TON of people to come. Become the local favorite and you are on your way. Hope this helps.
