I believe people should quit feeling helpless. The self confidence that people display now days is very sad. So many people want someone else to save them when we have a great ability to save ourselves.

I liked this article and while I'm not a proponent of violence and fighting unnecessarily, the ability to feel confident, brave and in control of my own environment is something I cherish. Everyone needs to be told early, often and repeatedly that...

YOU ARE NOT HELPLESS! YOU ARE STRONG, WISE AND CAPABLE OF MAKING GOOD DECISIONS! GET OUT THERE AND DO IT AND DON'T WAIT FOR ANYONE ELSE TO DO FOR YOU WHAT YOU ARE ABLE TO DO FOR YOURSELF! HOLD YOUR HEAD UP AND WALK BRAVELY THROUGH THE WORLD! YOU ARE SOMEBODY!!!!

Very empowering article. (I would rather die than live with no self confidence...somethings are worth dying for! Teachers can teach children what those things are without being aggressive, hateful and fearful.)

I think it's a great idea. Has staying still and hoping the gunman doesn't pick you to kill worked so far?
Maybe it's time to try something new. The biggest and strongest students in the highschool should also be part of an attack strategy team in their schools to go into attack and protect response.
I know I would want my boy to learn self defense and kick the $hit out of anyone who tried to hurt him or anyone else.---

We should be teaching our kids to be heros, not victims.

This could only be happening in Texas!
Now we are teaching kids to carry and use dangerous weapons?
What kind of stupid 'solution' is this? I wouldn't want my kid to have to use pair of scissors to fight someone who is armed to the teeth, because some idiots feel it is their 'legal right' to have an arsenal at their disposal. We are putting children in the 'frontline', instead of looking at the source of the problem.

Wouldn't it be a much better idea to take the guns away from the 'nefarious intruders'? (Whatever the hell that might mean.)

A 'nefarious intruder' without a gun is just another 'intruder', and could be handled easily.

Its about time people were taught to fight back for themselves. Even without being told to, I made up my mind long ago that if someone tried to open fire in my school i was NOT going to just sit there and be another victim.

Oh, and guns don't kill people, murderers do. Have you ever even fired a weapon? Firearm competitions are actually quite competitive and fun.

A $95,000 dollar federal grant to train students to fight an armed intruder? What a waste of tax payer money.

That's a sad state of affairs. How about finally realizing that it's time to ban handguns, assault weapons, etc.

What's next? A federal program to teach toddlers handgun safety?

I think the idea has some merit.

I'm surprised at those who think the answer is banning guns. Look at the dismal failure of trying to fight drug abuse by banning drugs, trying to end abortion by making it illegal, or trying to keep teens from having sex by prohibiting effective sex-ed courses. I would hope that by now people realize that government prohibitions are wasteful and self-defeating.

I had a visual of "Children of the Corn", but hey, if the bad guys can have weapons-so should everyone else. I LIKE IT.

GOOD IDEA. A FEW YEARS AGO IN EITHER KENTUCKY OR ARKANSAS AN ARMED STUDENT TRYING TO ATTACK HIS SCHOOL WAS SIMPLY OUTGUNNED BY OTHER STUDENTS.
HE PEACEFULLY SURRENDERED.
