The minimum is one year but this depends on the location and requirements and type pf job. Sheriffs in most counties are not even required to have any law enforcement training. Small township cops need no training at all. Paying $10/hr you are going to get what you pay for. FBI agents must have a law degree. More responsible local government require a year and encourage further studies after becoming a police officer.

It depends on where you live. Some countys would just except a high school diploma and to just pass the academy.

Too much education may be detrimental for that job. Sometimes it might be better not to give too much thought to what you are doing.
