Hi. Any object receives light from any source of illumination according the fancy sounding "inverse square" law. This just means that if you, say, triple the distance than the light is (1 / 3 * 3) or 1/9. If you know the distance you can determine the brightness, assuming the light is not absorbed or blocked by anything.
