I'm looking to install wood flooring. I've got two VERY active yellow labs. I've heard that laminate flooring is much more resistant to scratching by dog nails? Is that true and if so, what brand do you recommend. If not, how do I get hard wood to resist dog nails?

Laminate floors are wonderful for owners of indoor pets.
Check this link for Pergo flooring.

Jumping is correct. Bamboo is an excellent alternative to laminate and oak. The problem that I have with laminates is mostly with the finished look, even a perfect installation leaves you with a floor where you can pick out the factory edges that are incongruous with the graining in the pattern. Plus the acoustics leave a lot to be desired, Bamboo floors have a much more subdued tone, especially in large open rooms. Because laminates are not nailed to the floor, sound waves are transmitted along the length of the solid surface, instead of being absorbed by other solid surfaces such as subfloor and structure. The foam underlay, actually insulates, and reverberates the sound back into the room. (dog nails constantly clicking on laminate will drive you nuts) And if you happen to have a leak or an accident, there is no fool proof way to repair a center section of laminate flooring without removing a large portion, There are several viable methods to replacing nailed, T&G plank board floors.

We have a lab mix with extremely long tough nails that grow like crazy (her groomer was ill and she didn't get trimmed for 8 weeks and her nails were over an inch long) We also have a smaller mix breed puppy who runs through the house a lot.

We have laminate flooring through 80% of our downstairs and it is AWESOME, no scratches or nicks, the fur comes up quickly with a dry swiffer, no splinters or crevaces like with real wood, either.

The brand we have is Supra glueless snap-in flooring.
The people who we bought the house from put it in, so I know nothing about how it installs or the warranty on it, but I love it.

My groomer (and best friend) loved it so much she put laminate in her shop area.

I went for real wood... looks so much better. But it does not come cheap. It all depends on the budget you have. Laminate is more hard wearing, but you just cannot compare the feel and look of real wood. In regards to the skirting boards.. if you have beading out around the edges, then there is no reason to remove the skirts. It will also give the room a finished look, and if you have wiring for speakers etc.. for your telly, then you can hide these behind the beading... but remember... its a major job, to change once done. Also, get it all fitted by professionals. Its much quicker, and it will look much much better. Good Luck

Not only are laminates harder, they are not finished with excessive coats of polyurethane. Most of the scratch marks people encounter with hardwood come i the finish, rather than the wood itself.

We installed bamboo hardwood flooring (renewable resource and harder than most others), and it looks great, wears well, and requires no finish than what it came with. You can also get bamboo laminates if you don't want to go through the hassle of nailing the floor down.

I have some and have never had dog scratches, but I only have one and he's a lhasa apso. Much smaller and lighter weight than your labs.

Pergo and Columbia are both good. But there are newer ones I don't know the names of that look a lot more realistic. Check them out at Home Depot.

we have 3 dogs in the house, one is a great Dane and in spite of all his attempts he hasn't scratched it in the past 2 months. My only complaint is the upkeep of any hardwood/laminate flooring with 3 dogs in the house. I really would have preferred linoleum, it's easy to wash and keep clean.

Yep, those composite materials are much much harder than real wood. There are lots of brands. They key is to pick a "look" that you like. Shop the stores and see. They are all good, if professionally installed.
