Respect should be given and earned by everyone. Older people, for various reasons, are often scorned by younger people. Everyone will one day be old, if they live that long! I am an older person, find some other older people very rude, some vulnerable, some shy - just as I find the same with young people. Unfortunately over the years of plenty and 'what I want, I want now' generations, manners, respect, consideration etc appears to have diminished but there are still a lot of good people out there -young and old-- pity they don't the same amount of publicity as the 'difficult' ones!

I was brought up to respect my elders. I personally think I have much to learn from them. I feel as though I, or anyone for that matter have no right to direspect any elder. For one thing look at thier age and all they have gone through, (depending on thier age..Prohibition, civil rights, world wars, womens rights..and so on). How can we not respect them? I take every chance I get to sit and listen to them and thier stories.
I make my two young children address adults and Mam or Sir or Miss... and Mr.....I also teach my children that no matter who it is, if they are told to do something they better do it (with in reason). I tell all of my friends and neighbors that if they see my children being bad or disrespectfull that they need to tell me. So many parents these days will take offence if someone tells on thier childs behavior. I don't. I FIRMLY BELIEVE IT TAKES A VILLAGE.
==========================================
I am probably going to take a lot of flack for this, but in an age where there are so many single parents and two income households, disciplining the children has become an afterthough, or falls to the way side completely. They are too often just stuck in front of the TV or unsupervised most of the day. Consiquently they learn how to become adult by what they see on TV. Young impressionable minds can not differentiate between entertainment and how things really are. They grow up thinking what they see on TV is the norm. They see the vidios on MTV as how things really are. Therefore; you have a whole generation of young people who lack morals and values. Pair that with poor disipline and it is a resipe for unrespectfull and dagerouse youth whom the older generations have no use or tolerence for.

Respect for elders? I think it a bigger problem than that. Times have changed and so have people unfortunately. We seem to be living in a time now that is all about material objects. More divorce, more child abuse, etc, etc. I believe it starts in childhood, what you are taught, what you see. Can you imagine what it might be like in 50 years? I've also noticed that alot of people have a big fear of death an don't like to be reminded. I personally respect my Elders.

I respect some elders but you should see the old couple over the road from me,they always stare in our house especially when we are eating and when I say hello to them on the street they blank us.I find a lot of them rude and nosey because they don't have anything better to do.

Not all people fail to respect their elders, just some people who were not brought up to respect them. As I am now 'plenty' seven next month, I should have given up allowing elderly ladies to come through a door before me and giving up seats to women and my elders on buses, but its pure habit!!

This drives me crazy. It seems like kids just treat older people as if they don't exist and don't matter anymore. When I grew up we said Yes. Ma'am and No Ma'am...Yes Sir and No Sir or we got in trouble. What happened? We can learn alot about life from our elders if we just ask them and are willing to talk to them. Their lives have usually been very interesting and they love to talk about the past. We should listen to their wisdom.Many of them have lived through a World War and the great depression...we could learn alot from them on how to get through these tough times in our world. They have already earned our respect.

I still do, and I think there are still a majority who do.
but I do think some children don't fear anyone anymore as elders have been stripped of any rights when it comes to disciplining children, leaving them as a bit of a target to the odd youngster who's so called 'bored.'
