We don't want to stick out like a sore thumb (tourist style), we want to blend in. We can't spend a lot of money on our wardrobe, but we want to look good. Any suggestions?

Give up on not sticking out like a sore thumb. Everything you do and say will scream "tourist!" Slacks, turtlenecks and sweaters would be good for blending in, unless you are into clubbing. The best way to blend in anywhere is to buy clothes locally after you have had a good look at people. So wear whatever, check out the kind of places you want to blend in, then buy those clothes locally.

Your girlfriend could wear (tight) jeans and high heels if she wants to look nice. If you're doing a lot of walking though. . .maybe boots. No athletic shoes. No basketball shoes! Just don't dress like you're going camping. Maybe a dressy raincoat over the jeans and a long scarf.

Bring lots of black clothing, tshirt, blazer. Jeans are always in style. Skip the tennis shoes, but bring good walking shoes. Do not smile (this is weird in the US as it means friendly) in France they think you are either insincere or the village idiot. Bon voyage.
