In football (soccer), an assist is attributed to the one, or occasionally two, previous players of the scoring team who directed the ball to the scoring teammate (including any pass or shot rebounding off the crossbar or posts), meaning that they were "assisting" in the goal. If the opposing team gains possession, not just tips or deflects the ball, and then loses possession again to the player who scores, there are no "assistants" in the goal and therefore no "assists" are awarded.

In baseball a player gets a putout if they :
1. catch a fly ball, pop up or line drive
2. catch a throw from another player and tag a base for a forceout or tag a runner
3. a catcher gets a putout when they catch a third strike.
An assist is when a throw is made leading to a putout.
An assist is also credited to a player if they make a throw that should make an out but the person catching the ball drops it for an error.
A pitcher does not get credit for an assist on a strikeout even though the catcher gets a putout.

In baseball, an assist is when a throw results in an out when the person receiving the throw has the ball. For instance, shortstop fields a grounder and throws to first. First baseman steps on the base, so the ss gets an assist. The same would be true if the first baseman tagged out the runner. A putout is when a fielder gets a batter/runner out by catching the ball in the air, tagging a base, or tagging a runner.

An assist is awarded to player who transfers the baseball to player who records the out. Putdown? I am not sure if I have ever seen that in any statistics in baseball.
The only baseball terms I can find and know of that have "put" in it are.
Terms that start with: put
put away
put out
put out the fire
put the ball in play
put the bat on the ball
put-out
putout
putty arm

An assist is if you give the ball to the person that gets the out. Examples: First basemen flipping to the pitcher to get the runner at first. Center fielder gunning home to get the runner out. The pitcher and catcher respectively get the out, but first basemen and center fielder respectively get the assist.
