Gifs are limited to 256 colors,, jpeg can handle 24k colors

Gif's are preferred for smaller files like icons, web graphics etc because of the color limit there file size will be very small in comparison to jpeg. Jpegs are preferred for photos because of the wide color range available. Jpeg is a lossy compression format meaning that you can adjust the compression ratio but as you increase the compression you have a loss in quality.

JPEG/JFIF is the format most used for storing and transmitting photographs on the World Wide Web. For this application, it is preferred to formats such as GIF, which has a limit of 256 distinct colors that is insufficient for colour photographs.
