I was under the impression that employers can have cameras but there must be signs warning that there are cameras but individuals also have a right to privacy. If you wanted to make a personal call from work there must a facility where you can do that without there being any monitoring.

I'm sure the cameras are legal ... but the whole sound thing is weird. These gals are at work, not in prison or some gulag or forced labor camp.
I would call up the labor board and ask. Even if it is legal, it's going way overboard. They are sewing and not working on something top secret.
I think your friend should look for another job. Seriously, what's next ... the boss comes in and checks the toilet before they flush to make sure they really did go?

Yes it is legal as long as it is disclosed. The workplace is owned by a business and can be operated as they see fit. Just like when you walk into a gas station and they have cameras, they also have sound and are for the protection of the business.
You shouldn't worry about if it is legal or not if you have nothing to hide.
They can also record phone conversations and monitor phone calls as long as it is disclosed in the employee handbook or they have you sign a notice of monitoring.

Supervision, ever heard of it.
If the cameras were hidden with the intent to spy on the employees in the bathrooms or lunch rooms, probably, but not when visible and known to be there.
Take away the cameras and they would only replace them with a supervisor, with eyes and ears.
This is not probably the answer you wanted to read.
Good luck.

If you know they're there, is there a problem/ You just put a radio next to the microphone, tuned to some Albanian traditional music station.
