i give jeter and johan a lot of credit, i do but the mvp is most valuable player and that means the team would SUCK without him and to me that screams david ortiz and the red sox, i mean jeter had a great year, but without him they still have a great team (MONEY MONEY MONEY) and could probably win, now with johan santana you can argue, but i think ortiz is the key to the red sox success, forget all that dh's cant win mvp bs it dont matter if you play d its what impact you have on your team, so how could you vote for anyone else but ortiz?

Defense (and pitching, in baseball's case) wins games. Offense sells tickets. The theory goes for every sport. The Tigers have the best pitching in baseball, that's why they're doing so great. That's why Houston got so far last year. They still were out-pitched in my mind, but pitching gets you a long way. The Twins wouldn't have gotten to October without Johan. Plain and simple. Johan lost his start, the Twins lost the series. When you can't rely on the best pitcher in baseball, you can't win games. Why do you think Boston didn't make it this year? Pitching fell through. You only come up once every 9 batters. There's not THAT much you can do for your team as a DH. Johan has MVP nailed down, easy.

In response to McArthur1977's answer the MVP is voted on BEFORE the playoffs begin. Derek Jeter is the only true MVP. In a year where injury plagued the Yankees Jeter was the only consistent player on that team. If it were not for Jeter and Rivera the Yanks probably would not have made the playoffs. I find it almost impossible to give an MVP award to someone who played about 20 minutes of every game, David Ortiz. Also defense is a big part or the vote. How many times did Jeter make a play to prevent a big inning. How many did Oritz make. There is your ANSWER.

Because Ortiz is the most feared hitter in the AL, that doesn't make him MVP. Ortiz's numbers alone make him a legitimate candidate, but the Red Sox folded in August and failed to even gain a wild card berth. It all boils down to what is the definition of MVP. Is it someone who post eye-popping stats, or is it someone who also posted impressive stats and added leadership into the equation? Jeter's numbers compared to Ortiz pale in comparison. And the Yankees were knocked out in the first round. So neither Ortiz or Jeter should be MVP. It should go to someone on the As or Tigers.

As a Red Sox fan I understand how you feel. Don't forget though in the rules for that voting state the following and pay special attention to rule #1
• No. 1: "Actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense."
• No. 2: "Number of games played."
• No. 3: "General character, disposition, loyalty and effort."
• No. 4: "Former winners are eligible."
• No. 5: "Members of the committee may vote for more than one member of a team."

With this in mind I agree he was the most valuable batter in baseball this year, but as rule 1 states he should play defense and with that in mind I hate to see a Yankee win but I believe it will be Jeter.

I agree that Big Papi should be the MVP. Actually he DID play defense when they played the NL teams, and some when Youk was hurt. Remember, Papi had 3/4 of a Triple Crown, most homers and most RBI. Did Big Papi have any errors when he played 1st? Anyway, Jeter had what 34 errors????????? Big Papi for MVP!

If any DH is voted MVP it automatically discounts the complete players defensive contribution to their respective teams. Maybe baseball should come up with a special award for the leagues most outstanding DH. That might be the best way to handle it.

AL mvp - jeter. i hate him, but he'll win. i'd give it to morneau, and i hate the twins too. if ortiz wins, hafner should share it with him. that's all i have to say about the dh.
NL mvp - howard - would have been pujols but he missed too much time
AL cy young - santana - i'd give it to verlander though. just cause i'm a homer
NL cy young - no one- i don't think anyone national league pitcher had a dominating year. some came close it will just be a weak year for an NL cy young winner.
AL roy - verlander no question - liriano and papplebon couldn't hang with the big boys.
NL roy - dan uggla
AL manager - jim leyland. easiest award of the year
NL manager - joe giradi

Since the Red Sox didnt make the playoffs his chances of MVP are hurt. He didnt play defense and he was also out homered by a ROOKIE in Ryan Howard.

truthfully, Derek Jeter is the MVP of the Yankees...Ortiz isn't even the superb(MVP) on the purple Sox, Ramirez is, whether he's a destructive protecting LF...there isn't any longer something incorrect with being a fan, yet a minimum of i attempt to examine issues objectively.. in case you're conversing approximately AL MVP and you do no longer even point out Joe Mauer or Jermaine Dye?...The Twins and White Sox the two have over 70 wins and are ideal interior the thick of the race.. Jeter BA-335 OB%-411 SLG-472 OPS-883 Dye BA-324 OB%-392 SLG-636 OPS-1028 Mauer BA-360 OB%-439 SLG-515 OPS-954 My vote might could circulate to Dye, who's having a great season the two interior the sphere and on the plate...in assessment to Jeter who isn't a solid protecting shortstop to assert the least(RF-3.9) and Ortiz who does not very own a glove(he did borrow one for a pair of video games hahaha)...Mauer may well be 2d on my record... i'm a life long Cardinals fan and Royals fan in view that sixty 9 so it is not like i'm being a "homer"...

If your team loses, how can they have a most valuable player. The MVP should be the person who makes your team win! The MVP should definitely come from Detroit.
