i posted this in food and drink but then spotted this section so sorry for the repeated question....
I know that it is suggested that items of clothing with gum on should go in the freezer but do i need to do anything else first? should i place teh jeans in a bag? in a tea towel possibly? any advice gratefully received - and thanks in advance =)

No, just stick it in the freezer. I've done this with denim and it really works. Be sure to put a stain treatment on the jeans after the gum comes off and before you wash.

I wouldn't stick them in the freezer I would just get a piece of ice and stick on the gum and freeze the gum not the whole pair of pants

i had this problem the other day with my nephew but it was smeared so the freezer thing didn't work! Try nail polish remover and an old toothbrush...worked good for me. You may want to test a small area first to make sure it won't mess up the jeans.

Steps
Harden the gum by rubbing it with a cube of ice.
Scrape off what you can with a dull-bladed butter knife.
Rub the area with a pre-treatment enzyme product or liquid laundry detergent.
Launder as usual.

After you let it get good and frozen, the gum should come off. If it doesnt you may need to get a straight edge razor blade and scrape the remaining gum off. Just be careful to not cut the fabric or cut you!

WD-40 or the type of lighter fluid that you put in zippo lighters....Both of the products remove alot of sticky things...stickers, watermarks, gum and candy.
Neither one of these products leave an oily mark on your clothes once they are washed...
Have a blessed day

Rub an ice cube on it, it should become hard and easy to take off

ice will harden it and you can remove it easy like that.
just put one cube of ice on it and leave it there till it melts and the lightly scrap it off and there you have it.
