Many people get away without a skimmer for awhile but then all of a sudden their tank crashes and they have a massive wipe out. I really, really encourage you to get a protein skimmer. It goes a long way to keeping water quality high. In a fish only tank there are lots more fish which means a heavier bioload which means lots of waste. Buy a good skimmer, not a piece of junk. I recommend Aqua C or BakPak skimmers. It is an expensive piece of equipment but really important. I personally would not set up a saltwater tank without it.

I would not have a saltwater tank without a skimmer. Stay away from seaclone. I would recommend a coral life needle wheel skimmer. Very good at a good price.

Use a skimmer. A protein skimmer removes organics in your tank by way of mass air bubbles. When the water passes through the skimmer, the air bubbles it produces allows the chemical compounds of organics to attach to the bubbles and collects in a skum cup and disposed of. Skimmers can run from $50 to as high as several hundred dollars. Research several different types of skimmers so that you can choose the right one for your tank.

So where is all the protein going to go? Get a skimmer, they don't need to be fancy.
