I checked motor oil level (it was full). I topped off the anti-freeze. I checked the gas tank cap and it was tight. Still the light is on and the heater will not heat up.

All right now, your check engine light is on. What this means is that there is a problem in one of the many sensors or there are certain conditions not being met for your engine to run properly as monitored by the computer that controls engine functions. But you gave us a clue, that your heater doesn't heat up which makes me believe that your engine thermostat, for your coolant, is stuck open, which I have seen happen often. This problem can cause your check engine light to come on setting a history code that can be read using a scanner,
Your best bet is to take it to a mechanic to have your car repaired because there is something deffinitely wrong.

Yamster Mechanic and not a soothsayer says we need information year make model and mileage. Little things like what you were doing when you first noticed the light. "Service engine soon" "Check engine" are malfunction indicators there are about 600 things the computer can see that may cause the "MIL" malfunction indicator light to turn on. Go to the autoparts store that checks engine lights and give us the code but do not clear the code unless it is P0455 evap gross leak caused by missing or loose gas cap or you just put on one of those locking gas caps that leak.

you mighty have a leak in your radiator,if all levels are full.it might take a while for your light to turn off, same thing happened to my car, when I had a slight leak a few years ago..I own a Ford Taurus, and that is a problem with them. I don't know what kind of car you have ,but if it is a Ford..drive it for a while and if it doesn't shut off, have your radiator flushed and checked for leaks. Don't top off the radiator to full if filling a reserve, the pressure will crack the reserve, that was my mistake ,and the reason why I had a leak on my Ford.
The newer cars are not like the older ones, where you had to "top" off all levels.
If you fill your levels too high, the pressure will damage something.

You should take it to a shop. If it says check engine it is emmissions related, since you checked the cap and it is on properly it could be lots of things O2 sensors are usually the main culprit. Get it scanned. As far as the heater is concerned, it could be the heater core, fan or something as simple as a fuse.

Check the fluid level in the radiator. If it is too low it will cause the heater to malfunction. Also make sure that you add the correct anti-freeze, if you have to.

You could be low on coolant. That would explain the engine light being on (overheating) as well as the lack of heat in the vehicle ( no coolant to supply the heater core). You say you added coolant but if the vehicle got low on coolant it could have air trapped inside the engine block that could be causing your problem.

it could be sooooo many things. You will need to take it to the local garage and run a code check...have it put on a diagnostics machine. Of course you will lose your a s s because they will charge you alot! Are you having any other problems besides the light???

Probably the O2 (oxygen) sensor on the exhaust. Take it to the shop, they'll swap the thing (which controls your fuel-air mixture and emissions controls) and reset the computer.
Probably a $50-$75 job (depending on the make/model of your car).

The lubricating system maybe damaged because the warning lamp warn about oil pressure or your car battery isn't charged well : You must control & clean the battery electrods & check your alternator & wires .

Could be anything. Emissions, something minor, etc.
Unless you have the stuff to access your car's computer or your manual tells you how to access codes, you'll have to take it to someone to read the code and fix it.
