Original yes they were, think back to the old days, no heaters, sometimes not even a roof!, So gloves were very much needed, and your gloves were kept in the glove box.

They probably got their name from glove storage originally, but nowadays it seems like there's too much other stuff we need to keep in there.
Heh, this question reminds me of the commercial in which a guy is getting stopped by the police and when he opens his glove compartment he takes out a pair of gloves. His girlfriend says with disgust, "You actually keep gloves in your glove compartment??!"

NO, they hold every thing but gloves, but when they first started making cars, they were for woman when they sat in the passanger seat have some place to put thier gloves
