Mystics have the same role today as they always have; to show the world another form of reality, to awaken people from their day to day illusions and try to get them to think beyond the filling of their holes.

Mysticism is an attitude relating us to our highly spiritual needs – our needs for belonging in life to entire life in a very profound way. It incorporates concepts of total acceptance – the world as the life as love for God, his truth and beauty we long for eternally; and the ultimate object of our love that we yearns to reach as close as we can. These concepts are highly impractical in the materialistically demanding and pragmatic world we live in today. Almost all religions and some extreme religious sects entertain these mystical thoughts within the main body of their doctrines and practices.
The modern age of knowledge commenced in the early renaissance period. In this new order of human thought light is not only to be the light of love of God but also, and more prominently, to be the light of reason and with this light human mind will seek wisdom. The love of wisdom, that is the meaning of the word ‘philosophy’ in this light lead us to even digress and diverge fro the ancient wisdom to formulate something called ‘Modern Wisdom’ to deal with ever so more newly emerging issues of our life.
Before the dawn of the age of knowledge, there was an age of mysticism, however surrounded by mists of superstitions and distorted beliefs, there were, as it is found in the literature of the time that survived to this day, very highly disciplined approaches to mysticism in various parts of then civilised world.
Now, we have almost passed onto the age of information and power. We have almost thought the age of knowledge – the knowledge, as we know it. In the further we will need a different type of know – a knowledge that would incorporates within wider accounts of human needs. It is presumable that after the age of knowledge and information has run it due course in the development of human mind; after we find that rational knowledge cannot take us where are want to reach. And mysticism can be a right means of exploring excellence of human life in terms of the divine and the supreme.

Tongue in cheek answer: At the moment it seems to be get a satellite TV show and rake in some money.
Serious answer: Despite Monkey Harris answer at the top, various forms of spirituality do have a place in modern living, not just a retreat from the rat race but also just to help cope with day to day living. Best find a spirituality you are comfortable with, whether it is established state-sanctioned religeon or something more off the beaten track.
