Easy way :Hold a permanent magnet with one end touching the steel shank of the screwdriver. Stoke the shank from handle end to tip end,. Repeat about a couple of dozen times. ONLY stroke in the same direction, REMOVE magnet contact between strokes. Use SAME magnet end at all times. Result : the screwdriver is a permanent magnet and will hold screws without hand support.

M Mike is right take a length of wire and wrap it around the screwdriver about 4inches of wrapped wire should do it like M Mike says it will spark also do not hold it to the battery too long as it will get hot quick You can hold one end to the pos+ or neg - and touch the other end to to the other post 4 or 5 times touching should do it do not switch post during this process as it will DE-magnetize it

My mechanic friend showed me - Take a length of insulated wire - 12 gauge or so, wrap it around the length of the screwdrivers metal shaft like a coil, strip the ends and touch the ends to a battery - 1 to the pos., 1 to the neg. It might spark a little, but it will magnetize it. He showed me this years ago.

Rub it with a permanent bar magnet in a consistent direction about 20 times.
It won't be a particularly strong magnet, but it will pick up iron and steel screws (and filings).

All these techniques are all well and good. But what if you want to drive a nonferrous screw? Try dipping the tip of the screwdriver in something sticky. Caulk, grease, glue`s a little runny, experiment.

I learned how to do that in school, just hook it up to both the pos. and neg. posts of a battery at the same time. don,t use too big of battery or you might get burned
