David is getting older and is a one dimensional player (designated hitter), should the sox get fresh blood for David while his value is up?

Good grief NO! It's already looking possible that the Sox are going to lose Manny Ramirez this off-season (rumours are abundant that he's asked to be traded), so to trade Big Papi as well would destroy any offence we have.

Right now the priority for Theo Epstein and the Red Sox Front Office is to strengthen the starting rotation (currently it stands at Schilling in his final season, Wakefield and Papelbon). They will also have to look at who is going to take-over as the closer from Papelbon, and decide whether Delcarmen, Hansen and Timlin are a strong enough bullpen.

Pitching has to be the priority this off-season, along with finding offensive help if Manny does leave.

I also disagree with your assessment of David as "one dimensional" - he played pretty good first-base during the Interleague games in NL ballparks.

The Sox can expect another good season out of David, and then maybe look at his future.

Boston will be very busy this off season. They have some major decisions to make. Schilling is over the hill. Manny is a wack job!! Francona couldn't manage a checker board and the fact that the Blue Jays finished the season in front of the Sox has fans in an uproar. Ortiz did nothing the last half of the season starting with the 5 games sweep by the Yankees in August. That marked the beginning of the end for Boston. Ortiz (might) have some trade value but not nearly as much as he had before the 2006 season began. I think you're right, the Sox need new players starting with their pitching staff. Maybe they can get a couple of prospects for Ortiz but not much more.

No....He may be 1 dimensional I agree but look at the financial steal the Red Sox made in keeping him at only 12.5 per year through 2010 and an option for 2011. Plus he is one of the greatest clutch hitters in baseball history. What the Sox really need is pitching and since Manny will be going in short term future another big bat to protect Ortiz. The fans if the Sox trade him I would have to say that there would be a long term effect on the fans. Not a good thing. One last point, how about the big mistakes the Sox made in the past like Bagwell, Babe Ruth for money, and I would have to say the worst non move was not to sign Jackie Robinson because a grounds person yelled get that n****r off my field.

He is a DH and there is no way he is going to the NL. It really depends how much salary he wants to leave on the table, since he's at the point of his career where the power stats could collapse at any time; he is hardly the "final piece" for a team making a step into playoff contention, so no club building with younger players will want him. Guillen is the type of manager who would take a chance on him - though - and the the Marlins may be willing to play the name game (again) to try and put a few more fans in the many empty seats.

I would say yes, but ONLY if they can get ONE top of the line starting pitcher and a couple of highly regarded pitching prospects. Otherwise, they should keep the greatest DH ever!!

Chow!!

The problem for Boston here is :

Send to another AL rival? no.

Send to the NL? no what would he do? DH? he can't in the NL

I think Boston would be better served to keep him
