LIMEWIRE is extremely unsafe to use! There are literally thousands of virus infected files on there, purporting to be downloadable files, but have hidden scripts in them - simple through to malicious virus scripts.
Also, unless you have adequate firewall protection, you are opening up a 2 way conenction to the internet which reduces the security integrity of your PC.

I will give you a similiar answer that I gave to another person who asked this question. You want to be extremely careful when using Limewire. Although you will probably be able to find what you want, I have often seen that many files (EXE, ZIP, compressed files) contain viruses or spyware. If you have virus scanning software, some are pretty good at catching a Trojan virus before it executes. You can try to scan the file first also to check for viruses or problems. If you want to be totally safe stay away from Limewire for exe (execuatble) files. Many people say that they have never had problems and Limewire is great, however I am "often" helping people with Spyware, Malware problems. Often the culprit is files they assumed were safe on Limewire.
Best practice is to be wise to what you are downloading. Do not assume "EVERYTHING" is safe. For me, I use Limewire in a VirtualPC, on another computer I do not care about. However, not everyone can do this, so just keep safe and happy file hunting.

It is safe but make sure it didn't fool you into sharing everything off your computer. Some of those p2p programs have different techniques. I may be mistaken, but.. It is illegal to use Limewire to download copyrighted material from someone other than the owner of that material. It is legal if they are the owners of that material, to, download to your hearts content. I think it might be against the law in Australia, could be wrong, depends were you are. What is VERY ILLEGAL about Limewire that people don't realize is that if you don't read, pay attention or whatever and get fooled into sharing everything on your computer, and, some of that everything includes other peoples private information and you let everyone have it, that is not just illegal, it is wrong. If you don't believe me, using limewire, search for images called dscn or hpim , feel free to add a four digit number after it to mix things up. These are digi cam pictures, mostly from people who don't know they are sharing everything. Searching for text documents is an awesome power when trying to find business people who are sharing everthing. I am not saying to look into or do this. See for yourself, one in 7 should be sharing well over 5000 files, easy. This is a serious problem. I am not joking. I have been trying to stop this for months.

I uninstalled Limewire as I had nothing but problems with viruses and spyware. Also, not everything is what is seems on there - be careful if you have children downloading - some is porn and others irritating ad's. Personally I found it wasnt the hassle. If you do go ahead scan everything for viruses before opening.

yes you can get viruses downloading with limewire. in fact it's extremely easy. i can find hundreds of virus's any time i log on. you have to use common sense in order to spot them. if you are looking for music, only download mp3 files. if you are looking for movies only download wmv, avi, or mpg files. a full lenght movie is going to be at least several hundred megs, not just a couple. if you download programs or apps, and this is where most of them lurk, so they are the most dangerous, know the approximate size of the program you are looking for. for instance if you find a zip file on limewire that is supposed to contain MS office, which is easily 600 megs, and the zip file contains nothing but a 3 meg exe file, it's a virus! search limewire for msoffice right now, i bet you can find exactly what I'm talking about.
The bottom line: if you start doing shady things with your computer, you are going to encounter shady people and run the risk that they are going to harm you.

Check the extentions and sizes for what the download is supposed to be. Ie an .AVI won't be 13KB if genuine as that is far too small. If the sizes look wrong avoid. You'll probably get something which wipes your entire Windows clean (whilst you wait). Also be suspicious of any packages that are within an .exe as the shell tends to have a nasty addon. In fact even be wary of .exes.
I tend to use Azeuris for downloading TV programmes I've missed...generally, this is okay as the extensions cannot run viruses yet.

So far, I've had good luck with Limewire. I did get a virus on my new computer within a week of installing Bearshare though. I suggest trying Limewire.

P2P software is dodgy at best. Limewire is fairly good as far as the program goes, but you know these people on the internet. They'll infect pornography with viruses and mislabel it as a metallica album. Don't use limewire - use uTorrent!
