Maybe it was one of the areas where there was a push to build cheap council housing in the 60's and 70's, and that is reflected in the prices of property.
South East London is very poorly served by public transport, because it is marshland, so although it may not look that far away, travelling could be a problem.
North of the river is always best.

If you make informed decisions and approach your penny stock investments with the same thoroughness that you’d use in your other investments, you too can unlock a whole lot of profit potential. Learn here https://tr.im/H9LQC
It’s absolutely true that penny stock investors can make very quick gains. Synutra International, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYUT) is a great example of a penny stock. This dairy-based, nutritional-products company has jumped from a little Bulletin Board operation to a billion dollar corporation. The company finally graduated from Over-the-Counter status to the NASDAQ Stock Market bringing with it 113% gains in less than two months.
This happens all the time and it’s how some of the best investors in the world became the richest investors in the world. Buying some shares for pennies on the dollar and selling at $10 or $20 is possibly the fastest way from being a hobby investor to a super investor

Real estate has two ways to grow in value. As you pay off the loan, you build equity. As the market as a whole fluctuates, the appreciation value may change, but as a long term investment, you are more than likely to appreciate in value (grow more). The other thing Real Estate can do do is provide working income. ex: Rental property. This can cover, say those expenses like a mortgage.

i live in abbey wood and its probabaly as bad as any other inner city area .its not rife with crime but it does have its fair share .it also depends which side of the estate you live on,the thamesmead side is probably worse so id steer clear of it and thamesmead in general ,not sure about the house prices but where i am there going for around the 200k mark
you can get a train from abbey wood station to london bridge takes about 20 mins, plenty of green space about and lots of local history. there is a gypsy site on the edge of the estate but in general if you leave them alone they will leave you alone.and the person who comes from dartford should know about pikeys cos its full of them.there is no tube this far south but docklands light railway is being built now which takes you north of the river so tubes are easier to get

Many new investors are lured to the appeal of a penny stock due to the low price and potential for rapid growth which may be as high as several hundred percent in a few days.
Check here http://penny-stock.gelaf.info
Similarly, severe loss can occur and many penny stocks lose all of their value in the long term. Accordingly, the SEC warns that penny stocks are high risk investments and new investors should be aware of the risks involved but you can even make very big money. These risks include limited liquidity, lack of financial reporting, and fraud. A penny stock is a common stock that trades for less than $5 a share. While penny stocks generally are quoted over-the-counter, such as on the OTC Bulletin Board or in the Pink Sheets, they may also trade on securities exchanges, including foreign securities exchanges. In addition, penny stocks include the securities of certain private companies with no active trading market. Although a penny stock is said to be "thinly traded," share volumes traded daily can be in the hundreds of millions for a sub-penny stock. Legitimate information on penny stock companies can be difficult to find and a stock can be easily manipulated.

The longer term prospects might be better, as Crossrail is meant to go to Abbey when it is built, which will link it to Canary Wharf, City, West End and Heathrow. That's not supposed to be finished until about 2015 so don't hold your breath.

Thamesmead, was built on some funny land and initially was populated with council houses.
Abbey Wood I think is ok, but both are not ideal for commuting.
