The Jewish holocaust has been the subject of numerous books, films and documentaries. Very little appears to have been written about Hitler's attempts to exterminate gypsies (romanies). Is this because gypsies are less articulate than jewish people.

It is more than likely because not only would the Jewish have had more people killed, but there would have been a greater media focus on them because of what exactly had been done to them. Not to mention the fact that Hitler was so much more vocal about the Jews.

There is also the fact that the Jewish have been persecuted so many more times throughout history than gypsies have, and it is subject to the same types of stigma and stereotypes that we Westerners now have against Middle Eastern people.

True the Jews do get most of the press but there have been a few books & movies touching on the slaughter of the Gypsies. Part of the problem is that many associate Gypsies with 'crime' & skullduggery and thus their slaughter tends to fall into that category of 'deserved.' Actually The Nazis were quite effective at slaughtering many ethnic groups; Slavs were slaughtered by the Millions but many of them were 'communists' and thus, once more, elicting very little sympathy from Evangelical Christians and Republicans plus well meaning Democrats who fear being branded Un-American.

And yes you are quite right. Jews have been quite effective at keeping the topic 'alive' and focused on their plight while Gypsies tend to be stateless and lacking a 'national' voice.

Peace.....

I think it is two things. One, gypsies, Poles, gay people, the mentally ill/retarted, and handicapped all were subjects of extermination efforts by the nazis, but were never extensively documented by anyone.

Two, Jewish people have been selfish and myopic in regard to this issue. While being very articulate, they have also been overly selective in discussing only the pogroms against Jews instead of discussing the whole situation.

Very poor indeed.

Because there were far more Jews then everyone else killed. They should put more focus on the genocide of not just gypsies. But homosexuals, Polish, handicapped, mentally challanged etc... because just because there were far less then the Jews. Their stories shouldn't be ignored.

In terms of magnitude, many more Jews were killed by the Nazis than other groups. They also killed disabled people, criminals and others, but mostly Jews. Why do we focus our 9/11 memorials on NYC versus the Pentagon and the field in Penn?
