Gay is an adjective meaning "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy"; however in modern usage, gay is a word usually used, as either a noun or adjective, to refer to same-sex sexual orientation; homosexuality.

"Gay", when used as an adjective, sometimes describes traits associated with both queer, or homosexual, men and women, culture or lifestyle. The term lesbian, on the other hand, is used exclusively in a gender-specific way to describe women who prefer sexual relations with other women.

The primary meaning of the word gay has changed dramatically during the 20th century—though the change evolved from earlier usages. It derives via the Old French gai, probably from a Germanic source.[

English is a living language and words take on new meanings. Wicked used to mean evil and vile, it now means cool (which actually means 'not warm and not cold...')

Gay used to mean happy and carefree ('a gay blade', 'have a gay old time' etc) but in the 1960's, inspired by the civil rights movement, various homosexual activist groups adopted the slogan 'Good As You' and the acronym G.A.Y... This has now taken such a hold of the public imagination that it has supplanted the original meaning (like wicked, cool etc).

Interestingly there is now a new usage of the word to mean feeble or not very good (see recent radio controversy), the language lives on...

Gay does mean homosexuality but it also means being happy! But the gay meaning happy was mainly used in the olden days so I wouldn't advise you to skip down the streets going I'M GAY, I'M GAY, IM GAY!. Unless you really want to of course.

Gay has two meanings one is an older word and a slang word.
1. the older word means happy (example: im in an gay mood today.)
2. is when two of the same gender love each other. gay people are only mean, lesbians are gay girls. (example: those two men of there, making out, are gay.)

Gay is happy although now a bit old fashioned. The popularity of homosexual topics nowadays has made of it the number one definition for Gay.
