Written communication (covering words) is the most crucial influencing factor of our global culture. Without the ability of our words and figures to be recorded (and thus retrieved at a later date), we can only tell our stories directly. It is the indirect communication of thoughts and ideas through the written word that allows such varied people as Aristotle, Newton, Buddha, Ben Franklin, and Schrodinger to be the subject of debate and discussion so many years after they have passed on.

It would be interesting to dig into a relationship between various cultures and their types. For instance, a pictorial based type might only be found in a culture that had a strong patriarchy. Or a revolution might also signal a change in the kind of type people liked to use.

I think the type would come out of the culture, but perhaps some people have used type to influence a culture - I'm thinking of the early Communists, with their bold, modern, strong-looking type.

Let me know when you've written your book.

I would write about ancient History going back to the Persian wars I find it so facinating how people livedback then, and its all about wars in the middle east so I guess not much has changed, but I think that we can understand the present a lot better if we have an understanding of where we come from

Perhaps it's the arabic numeral system. Before that there was only the roman numbering, and could not be used for math. The one thing the Moslems gave us was the zero (0).
