most people are really into thier music when they are 15-21 years old. during this time they get thier first girl or boyfirend, and thier lives are like an 80's john hughes movie. they tend to associate songs with all those good and bad memories. you get older, have kids, life is no longer all about you anymore, and you have no time for all that drama crap in your life. Your outlook get's more cynical, more reality based. music ain't so important anymore. but you still have tthose memories of all those 'great" songs, so everything else before and after is crap in your opinion.
that's how it works with most of us.

Shame On You Saying, "The Old Days, Anything Before 2000". How old are you, that was just 6 years ago. As you mature, you will see this is just-a-blink-in-time. However, to answer your question:
The as-you-refer-to older Music, told a story. If you doubt it, just look at the Lyrics. Music today is mostly just the rhyming of words, that in-most-cases doesn't make sense.

You are profoundly influenced by things during your childhood. It is only natural and reasonable that you would like these things. The bad part is when you compare what you knew with what exists now. It is very difficult to be unbiased in this.

The brain has heaps of synapsis. When you are young these are all available for memory and the like. That is why things seems so exciting when you are younger. As you get older the synapsis that you dont use die off and it is much more difficult to learn new things. That is another reason that what we learn in our childhood stays with us as being bigger and brighter than what we experience now.

The very fact that you asked the question indicates that you are doing exactly the same thing and will one day have the same problem. The trick will be to keep an open mind.

too much copywritten music by today's so-called "artists" (not that you didn't have it before, but it's so frequent now)
Alot of it is computerized nowadays-lwhich makes for less natural musicians in the mix
But most of all, because music takes us back to our upbringing along with memories that we cherish the most. With yesterday's music you can tell what bands influenced other bands. It's less noticable today. If you took a number of songs from the sixties and seventies and released them today, they'd still sell today. That's what makes them "Classic Rock".

Everyone tends to latch on to the music they listened to while growing up. It's a nostalgia thing...we think it was good because we associate it with good things we were doing at the time. Or even because we associate it with PAINFUL things...it's just attached to our lives.

Try it with anyone. 90% of the population thinks the music from the years when they were between 10 and 20 was the best.

because most of the music out today is made to reach certain types of people. back in the day most bands made music for their pleasure. because they enjoyed and believed in what they were doing. ofcourse money had a big part of it also but its more so today because the world revolves around the almighty dollar. that doesn't exclude the music industry. alot of the old music is better because of depth and it lasts forever. most of the music on the radio will never be classic, because its made for todays ppl so when we are over it it will be over!

I'm talking Frank Sinatra days where the music was better, they all sounded great live, unlike some artists of today who sound absolute crap outside of the studio. Singers in the older days had much more meaning and class to their songs. Don't get me wrong, i love music of today too but Frank Sinatra is the best, i love him to bits. He makes me feel like dancin' and romancin' haha. I'm 18yrs old and alot of people think it very unusual for someone of my age to be into older music, but i love the music and i'll never give it up. =)

Generally human tendency is to reject new or cautiously accept it. In few years down the line, the present music feels better when compared with the then music.
