I had intercourse with my girlfriend and she just found out that she had a yeast infection... should we stop having sex or is it not a real problem... what should I do?

Usually the yeast infection is only the girl's problem, but she can clear it up quickly from the medication for yeast infections in a matter of a few days. I think it would be uncomfortable for her to have sex during that time. So, best to just lay off and let her heal herself with the meds.

Well, if you want a serious answer here's one. Fungal infections generally are known to get caught by people of lowered body resistance, like those having HIV or taking steriods therapy or just in bad general conditions, with few exceptions who are liable to catch fungal diseases.
1st of all, if you are uncircumsized, that's sure a very high risk factor for catching yeast infection either from your infected girlfriend of just by keeping this area unclean, it's a very good media for growth of fungal yeasts in between the glans penis and the foreskin covering it.
It's so easy to avoid growth of this fungal infection by washing this area frequently with water and soap when you are having a shower and make sure to keep it dry because moist areas are favorable media for fungi.
If you r circumsized, then just wash it using soap and water and you never have to worry.
If you already developed some fungal growth, then easily apply a topical anti-fungal like Ketoconazole (the trade name is Nizoral), that's an effective antifungal.
PS: I'm not giving you a prescription, I'm just a medical student, but I'm just giving you some outlines of that issue, you still have to consult your doctor if you developed any redness, or pain in that area or noticed any strange growths.

Occasionally the infection will be passed to the woman's mate, causing irritation, redness, and soreness of the head of the penis and sometimes a slight discharge.

Treatment for the women, is with an anti-fungal drug, such as nystatin, inserted deep in the vagina and if necessary applied to the entire region around the entrance to the vagina. Both sexual partners should use the medication when one has a recurring infection. Otherwise the disease may pass back and forth.

Men can 'catch' the infection from females, though I've not heard of them 'getting' it on their own.
If she had it and you had unprotected sex, 19 times out 20 the man will have it too, even it's only a really mild case.
Go to the doctor and tell him, he'll know what to do.
Both of you should be on antibiotics to make sure it clears up so that you don't reinfect each other.
When I had it a few years ago, my doc gave me enough antibiotics for me and my partner.

Guys don't get them as easily as women do, but I'd recommend waiting till she gets treated. You might already have yeast in your body but not have an infection some people just live with it and have syptoms when they get stressed...It lives in the gut and is the same thing that causes diaper rash in babies esp. when they have diahrea, so it's quite common and not exclusively a sexual disease.

I had a girl friend who gave me a yeast infection. My glans looked as if it had mini-measles. I was scared enough to go to the doctor who gave me creme - for her as well. She thought it a joke! at least your woman is up front with you. It is so easy to treat.

Men can catch yeast infections. They don't get them easily, but they can get them. I know it sucks, but abstain til' she's better. You could reinfect her or even infect yourself. Luckily, if you did get it, you can use her med if it's topical.
