It has nothing to do with the temperature.

When car lights are on oncomming drivers are much more likely to notice the car. In fact, in many countries the traffic authorities recommend driving with headlights on -- even during the day -- for that reason.

In most countires, indeed, it is a legal requirement for motor cyle driviers to have their lights on at all times of the day because mortorcyles are even easier to miss seeing than cars are.

Driving with headlights on during the day is less of an issue in cities than it is on the highways. However it does no harm and it is better to be safe than sorry as they say.

It's safer. Try taking a good look at on-coming traffic some time and see if the ones that are driving with headlights on aren't easier to see. In this state they must be on it it is raining regardless the time of day

Studies have shown that in areas where they've made it mandatory to drive with lights on during the day, there are fewer accidents. Think about it, you pretty much always notice when someone has their headlights on during the day, this probably makes you pay more attention to other motorists and increases alertness.

Many new car models automatically turn on daytime headlights. So, it's not a driver's choice. And, depending on the type of area in which you're driving, it's necessary.

Lots of cars, and all of the ones sold in Canada, have daytime running lights as a standard feature. I Live in Oregon, and my 99' Chevy Tahoe has them. They only go off if the emergency brake is on.

Some do it because it's safer.
Some left home early in the morning when they still needed them, and then forgot they were on.
Some cars headlights have sensors and turn on automatically - and they are real sensitive.

It's for safety. I drive with my headlights on all the time. It makes oncoming traffic know you are there.
