My bet is it is a combination of normal sexualality development and self stim. The best thing to do is to help redirect the child as soon as she starts the behavior. Often times autistic kids will react better to a visual cue than a verbal one. If there is already a visual cue or symbol being used by her parents or teachers to reprepsent "stop" that would be the best to use. Have it printed on a small card and have the parents carry it with them. As soon as the behavior starts, show her the card and then redirect her to something else, preferably something that will occupy her hands such as holding a bag, drawing a small picture or anything else she really enjoys and responds to (again, ask her teachers what they are using for reinforcement rewards). If the behavior continues despite all of this, my suggestion would be an appointment with her dr. to rule out any infections or physical issues and an appointment with the behaviorists or the phsycologist at her school to come up with other behavioral plans to handle the situation. They may also want to start a log of when she does this, where, what is going on at the time and other factors to see if there could be something that upsets her and this is how she responds to it.

I agree with the other comments.
I had a student a little older and when she began to menstruate it became very gross. We did as the others suggested, with picture communication..also her mom bought several cute pairs of overhauls and sewed up the sides which made it too hard to slide her hand down there. She was facinated with the draw features on a computer paint program and that becae he reward for not touching herself.

This is a stage of development. She has become aware of her body. It's not self-stimming behavior. Is she able to understand if she were told you don't do this in public? She needs to be told no as soon as she starts to do this in front of others. You can email me if you want if you have more concerns. Check this link out though.

most likely it is a self stimulating behaviour.this child needs to be redirected through some type of distraction.

Actually, it could be any of those. Rule out one at a time by taking her to the doctor first and then on.
