Basically it means that they can charge a little more money. Seriously, it's pretty much all marketing now.
Once upon a time, the suffix letters meant something, much like on a Ferrari, e.g. GTS = Grand Touring Spyder, LM = Le Mans edition, GTO = Gran Turismo Omologato (copied by Pontiac in 1964).
LS at one time meant "luxury spoprt" and the "i" usually meant injected, but that's kind of redundant now as all Chevys are injected. As for the LS, luxury sport is stretching it a bit in a Geo.
But then the marketing people at Chevy are hoping that Geo Metro LSi is/was more appealing than simply calling it a Geo Metro. Now they are all called Chevy rather than Geo, but the marketing angle still applies.

I don't know what the letters stand for, but the LSI models represented a model upgrade. Until 1995, Geo Metro LSIs were four-cylinders - after that, most Metros were made with the 4-cylinder engine.
