Well, yes, corsets are generally fairly uncomfortable, especially for long periods of time. ESPECIALLY if you are not used to wearing them. If you do really want to wear one, get a fashion corset (versus a real one which is generally much more expensive and restrictive) and don't tie the laces too tight. It will still look good if it is "just" snug, but NOT tight.
I have had experience wearing different types of corsets but once I laced mine too tight and it almost made me pass out plus it was really difficult to sit down or reach anything lower than my knees (goodbye putting on your own shoes).
P.S. A fashion corset is one that you will generally be able to buy at this short of notice. It will probably be pre-made and cost less than 100 dollars American. A real corset is custom made for you and requires measurements plus a lot of time and effort to make, but if you are serious about corsetry, it is worth it. I would NEVER go so far in tightening as to modify your body though. There is a reason we are made the way we are and to crush your ribs and organs like that is not good for you.
A good place to get a fashion corset is Fredericks of Hollywood (http://www.fredericks.com ). With your costume I would reccomend the Renaissance Corset or the Satin Strapless Corset or the Ultimate Satin Corset. The Renaissance Corset seems the most era appropriate, but you can check the site http://laracorsets.com/History_of_the_corset_001_Start_page.htm to get an idea of what style corset you want for authenticity.
I personally have the Renaissance Corset and it looks great on.

Everything I've ever read about corsets say that they are extremely uncomfortable. I think I'd rather my body be able to move and feel comfortable so Halloween would be more fun. One year I wore a costume that was uncomfortable, we went around to different parties and stuff, and I had fun, but really couldn't wait to get home and take the stupid costume off.

Not bad at all. A snugly-laced, well-fitted corset improves your posture, and can help keep your back from hurting. Tip: put on your socks and shoes first, and practice your ballet moves (knee bends).
I wear a corset all day at Renaissance faires, and the gown is far more comfortable with it than without it, as it takes the weight off my shoulders.
