Has anyone else noticed this: We have Yourichi in Bleach, Kyo in Fruits Basket and Luna in Sailor Moon. I'm sure there are more but these are the ones who come to mind. It's got so that I can say 'Wow the cat spoke', 'it's a talking cat', 'he/she transformed into a cat' in Japanese, probably not very useful in everyday conversation.

Is there a reason for this? Are talking cats part of Japanese mythology or something? Or does it just make a good story.

well it is practically of some reason for example: yourichi in bleach is a soul reaper right?? cats were actually meant as death gods since it said that cats come from the underworld.

and if you didn't realise, the main pet in japan in ancient times were cats, especially black ones. if you saw a dog in the manga talking it wouldn't really fit into the story.

Cats are more close to human's life at home in Japan. They love dogs too, but most dogs are kept outside.
So cats can be a close friend especially for kids, they could even talk in fictional manga.

the japanese like cats. if you realised, they have a few cat merchandise, like the lucky cat which likes to move his paws abt. probably they thought it would be cute to put talking cats in manga/animes.
