Well , you can get marginal improvement by doing some of the following ,assuming that you are using Windows XP
Disk defragmentation,
using tools such as startup manager to start only those applications that you require. Windows starts many services by default. you can stop some of those.
You can also use tools such as 'Free RAM' which frees up some of your RAM.
Also there are some softwares like tune xp which fine tune your system.(use it at your own risk)

Download spybot search and destroy and open the advanced mode tools option startup manager. This will tell you everything being loaded at the time of startup. Many of these items are not needed and slow down your computer. Preloaders and hardware utility programs are good candidates to stop from starting.
