Wow! Bagyman gave you some really great titles! But I didn't see 'The Boxer' by Simon and Garfunkle on the list! Nor did I see 'And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda' which is now a traditional Aussie tune about the First World War.
Ballads go with emotions and depend on how you are feeling at the time.
From the answers that you already have, it suggests to me that good ballads are a thing of the past - they don't get written anymore, just covered!
I can't remember the song now but I can remember my kids years ago being amazed that I knew all the words to a 'new' song!
