I have 3 tiger barbs in a small fish tank and 2 silver bala sharks in a big one (with 2 elephant nose fishes and a bottom feeder). We want to put the tiger barbs in the big fish tank with the bala sharks. The people at the pet shop don't know if it's possible/good. Please help us!

Well, the tiger barbs and the Bala sharks are compatible...as the balas are fast swimmers...However the barbs tend to be a little aggressive and may injure your elephant noses. Be sure to provide enough hiding spaces for the E-noses...Barbs also are bad with some plants (use leathery leaved plants like anubias or cryptocorynes) Bala Sharks can grow up to about 8 inches...but are very difficult to move at that size as they tend to go into shock.

Just don't overload the tank! you don't want to get any more than 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water. ( so a 10 gallon tank could take no more than one barb and one bala shark once they are fully grown.)

While the sharks are still small, you can mix them with the barbs, watch for fin nippng, when the sharks get bigger, they'll eat your barbs. Bala sharks are not known for growing to the tank, they usually outgrow the tank.

when i had tiger barbs, i remember them to be somewhat peaceful. you could always put them in there, and after a few days you'll know if your bala sharks are being scared or nipped at. then you could remove the barbs, but i think you'd be ok...

good luck, i'd like to know what happens..thanks.

you need 5 or more tigers to keep them occupied with each other for this are schooling fishes. they are a bit aggressive but can be manage, they do sometime eat plants and nip at other fishes fins specially smaller and slow moving fish. just give them ample space in the center for they like to make a mock fight, other than that they are okey. ENJOY !
