OMG!! I grew up on ranches and I use to rodeo... as well as my husband. Rodeo people typically have the most respect for their livestock than any other person I know out there!
If you want to sit here and tell me how poorly we treat our animals, then you really need to see what PETA and some of the people have tried to do to my horses! I was coming out from a competition and they decided to block our truck and started to shake the horse trailer! Several of our rodeo buddies and several people who attended the event were kind enough to step in and get them off the trailer. By the time we could get somewhere safe to stop and check on the horses, they were so freaked out that it took us forever to get them to calm down! Not to mention that we had to do some serious work with them to help regain their confidence in getting back into the trailer.
I've also had people claiming to be animal activists throw firecrackers at our horses... with us on them! Where's the kindness in that?!?
Before you start banning something you obviosuly have no understanding of, why don't you get to know some of the people in the sport? You'll see just how much we care for and take care of our animals. Not to mention all of the rules that we follow to ensure the safety of all of the animals! People like you who read something and then pass judgement without having any reliable facts, either way, really burn me up!

Apparently, you are reading one or two things about something you know nothing about and are letting that 2-bit information rule your thoughts.
For starters, anyone in a rodeo who severely injures an animal in the course of the rodeo is disqualified. Yeah, occasionally a calf has been known to break a neck in the calf-roping event. This is not something that is the goal - it is a tragedy. It was not the intent of the roper to kill the calf. That is NEVER the goal.
You are opposed to the bucking strap? I have a clue for you. That horse wears the bucking strap all of 8 seconds per rodeo. That's it. Tops. The rest of the year, that same horse is not required to do anything until the next rodeo. That horse is pastured, fed, vaccinated, has his hooves trimmed and is as free a horse as any privately owned horse can be. It is in the best interest of the livestock dealer to keep the broncs in top condition, well fed and healthy for as long as possible. Those animals are his livelihood!
No horse is ever used more than once for the 3-day event. Not a bad life at all - work for 8 seconds a year and have all your needs met for the rest of the year. And what happens when a horse is too old to buck? He has earned his retirement and will be put out to pasture for the remainder of his life. Several top rodeo cowboys have adopted these horses and keep them for the remainder of their natural lives. Why? Because cowboys are sentimental old fools.
Electric shock to make horses and bulls buck? Not at all. Anything that would shock a horse or bull would also shock the rider. That's all made-up garbage.
Don't take my word for it - go to a rodeo and ask your own questions.

People have tried to ban it before, but its too much of a nations tradition, you could never really ban it, it would still go on in small and remote towns.
If you have ever seen a rodeo live, the animals are fine, but just before they open the gate, they tighten the thick leather strap around the pizzle (penis), which is why you will notice they only ride male horses and cattle.
I think it is blantent cruelty, but you would have to argue with half the nation to get it banned, it would be like banning tobacco smoking cos its bad for you, it will never happen.

Rodeo is not more cruel than for example show jumping or endurance racing - the animals have a good live outside the ring, probably better than most school horses, because they can't use them if they are too tame.
So if you think of this as animal abuse, you should also start thinking about hundreds of animals, kept in tiny stalls with no social contact living a completely unnatural live - no one says anything there...

I know i hate it too!! i mean i really love and respect animals and i hate it when people hurt them especially for their own entertainment, when i found out about how they got the bulls and horses so fired up i felt sick inside. I hope that sometime in the near future it'll be banned.

Funny in your extensive reasurch you didnt notice the bucking strap comes nowhere NEAR the penis or the testicles ? Or that mares are also bucking horses?
Peta and other even more extream AR groups, who basicly object to any animal/human interaction, have enviable PR campains and is sad to see so many people are so uneducated about animals that they buy the BS hook, line & sinker

They won't ban it as long as the city hosting the event makes a big chunk of money. Money makes the world go around, regardless of who or what gets hurt. I think that's what broke back mountain was trying to do, it was trying to make cowboys seem gay so that the number of these "macho" hicks diminishes.

Because there are no bleeding heart liberals in the southwest. Just a bunch of cowboys who see it as a good time. Why bother with things that have ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT ON YOU? I can understand being upset if they are your animals being injured, but otherwise, why bother?
