Rignt now I'm listening to Nightwish. Technically it's a metal band but the vocalist is an opera singer and some of the songs are very touching and emotional (but they're heavy and vicious at the same time).
I listen to opera and celtic music, that's about as mushy as you can get
I also listen to epic, power and black metal, (by definition, metal is harder than rock).
so I guess in the end the real answer for me is that I listen to both (but i can't stand whiney emo bands)

Sorry to be irritating and not choose one or the other but......
Mushy rock songs
Seriously, I love rock. Although sometimes I am in the mood for something a bit mushier but still can't bring myself to listen to proper mush.
