Please help - a rusty tray was put in my new stainless steel sink and left wet, when i noticed it had been moved there i picked it up to wash it and saw several rust coloured marks all over the sink where the tray was touching. I can't seem to wipe them away; my sink is brand new - only fitted 2 months ago.

Is there anything i can do? The marks look like they are in the metal. I am so upset as it is not a cheap sink.....

Boil the kettle, put the plug in the sink and put in 2 washing powder tablets or a cupful of powder (biological is best) and pour over the boiling water. Leave to cool, drain the water and wipe clean. it should have removed the mark. If not, buy something called 'shiny sinks' which is made for stainless steel sinks etc. You can get it in supermarkets. Good luck!!!

Congrats on the new sink. Aren't the simplest things so exciting?

You could try using CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust) on the stain. You may need to let the CLR sit on the stain for a few minutes.

You could also try stainless steel cleaner or Cook Top cleaner for smooth ranges. It does work on stainless steel. It will make your sink real shiny.

Good luck to you.

I wonder whether bicarbonate of soda will help. It is mildly abrasive so should remove the mark but not scratch the sink. Or washing powder - a small amount on a sponge and a bit of elbow grease. That should do the trick.

Alternatively, you could use bleach based cleaner but obviously this is a less green option (and more smelly).

you have two options that will work and these are getting a metal polish (something like silvo or brasso etc) and polish it up should work a treat or get a rust treatment stick from a car shop and follow the instructions (there are many diff types so check packet stating what they do as some only stop the spread of rust whilst others create chemical reaction on the rust itself so it can be wiped away)

It's stainless steel...just lightly sand it with a high grit sandpaper (200 grit plus) and a food grade oil.(veggie oil) You will be fine. Works like a charm
