All the best singers are Classical trained the training is to get you to sing the right notes to the key that you sing in bear this in mind if you can sing operatic arias then you will be able to sing any thing also in singing the most important thing is breathing in the diaphragm or using all your lungs not just the top part. The better you can sing Opera the better you sing any thing .If a Singing teacher don't teach you these things then get one that does I have been singing since the choir days at school my voice broke waited till it settled .Had one or two good teachers I still sing Solos today for a British legion I went to Convent garden for audition I am over 60 and can still fill a room singing with out a Mike just to a piano By the way I am of Italian descent on my mums side I sounded like Mario Lanza I am still told I have a very nice Voice and singer I think I know a little of singing My email is keithmil61@yahoo if you want to talk about singing chio

I'd say start with classical for a year or so. It really builds up your technique which you'll need in the beginning. I've been singing since I was 8 and I was in a choir when I started. After, try to use your technique in stuff like Mariah Carey and other stuff you like. Classical really helps you.

I'd lean toward classical. Most of the singing I do is in a "pop" style, but classical training teaches you how to use your instrument and develope it. I believe Mariah's mother has an operatic background.

BTW, it's great to like Mariah, but listen to a lot of singers (and instrumentalists) so you can develope a style that is yours.
