Honestly, I can't imagine a party without alcohol. But anyway even that way, nobody makes the guests get deadly drunk. Organize some funny competitions, try to get everyone involved so that nobody would have a reason to sit alone in the corner and drink.

When ever I have a party, I always have drinks for people who wish to imbibe alcoholic drinks. I also have a variety of non-alcoholic beverages. That is the responsible thing to do as a host.It is up to you as a host to ensure no one has too much to drink.I've never had a party without alcoholic drinks and I've never heard any complaints. As far as your question about a hostess gift, I usually try to bring something besides a wine gift. It may be of a better, or lesser quality than was planned for the evening.

Offer both. Depending of the size & character of the party, alcoholic and non alcoholic punch bowls may not be a not a bad idea. Always bring a bottle of wine; really tacky not to do that.
