That's correct, the number is the style number, there are different numbers for different styles. If you looked up levi's by number, somewhere like ebay, you'd probably get a good visual explanation.

The numbers depict the fitting and style .... for eg 511 stands for regular comfort fit while 518 stands for boot cut

i think the numbers stand for how many pairs of a certian pair are made in one day at the factory. 501 pairs of Levi's 501 are made everyday, and so on.
