The animal kingdom is separated into two large groups-animals with backbones, called vertebrates, and animals without backbones, called invertebrates.

These large groups are divided into smaller groups called phyla. And phyla are divided into even smaller groups called classes. The animals in each group are classified together when their bodies are similar in certain ways.

Vertebrates:
Animals With Backbones

FISH
Swordfish, tuna, salmon, trout, halibut
AMPHIBIANS
Frogs, toads, mud puppies
REPTILES
Turtles, alligators, crocodiles, lizards
BIRDS
Sparrows, owls, turkeys, hawks
MAMMALS
Kangaroos, opossums, dogs, cats, bears, seals, rats, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, porcupines, horses, pigs, cows, deer, bats, whales, dolphins, monkeys, apes, humans

Invertebrates:
Animals Without Backbones

PROTOZOA
The simplest form of animals
COELENTERATES
Jellyfish, hydra, sea anemones, coral
MOLLUSKS
Clams, snails, squid, oysters
ANNELIDS
Earthworms
ARTHROPODS
Crustaceans: Lobsters, crayfish

Centipedes and Millipedes

Arachnids: Spiders, scorpions

Insects: Butterflies, grasshoppers, bees, termites, cockroaches
ECHINODERMS
Starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers

The official classification system is the Linnaean system which devides animals into their different phyla (singular: phylum). Some of what JESSICA listed under vertebrates are not the names of phyla but of classes. The terms "vertebrates" or "invertebrates" are not part of the Linnaean system and phyla are, therefore, not subdivisions of them. The status of subdivisions in the Linnaean system are: phylum, class, order, family, genus and species. All Linnaean names are written with capital letters. The basic unit of classification is the species, which has two parts in its name: the genus name and the specific epitheton and is generally in italics or underlined.
