has anyone ever done a family ski holiday in new zealand? when is the best time of year to go and what resorts are best? i would need a ski school thats good for young children and an area where the slopes are not too far from the resorts?

I used to live in NZ and have skied most of the NZ resorts. You didn't say what level you are at yourself. The south island has the biggest resorts and the snow will be more reliable there. Season starts June through to October. August is the most reliable month.
Cardrona is the biggest family skifield with big ski-school and lots of runs. It is best for beginners-intermediates. It is 20 minutes coach ride from Wanaka, all the Wanaka hotels lay on daily coach transfers. If you stay in Wanaka you can also ski at Treble Cone - more Intermediate-Advanced, but still a 20 minute coach ride. Wanaka is a beautiful lakeside town.
If you stay in Queenstown you can ski The Remarkables (Intermediate-Advanced, less good for kids) or Coronet Peak, which has a good ski-school. Coronet Peak is 15 mins coach from Queenstown, and is quite a big ski-field, again good for beginners-intermediates.
None of the NZ ski resorts are quite as ideal as the Alps in terms of ski in-ski out chalets, but NZ is beautiful and my favourite place on earth! The runs are open and not wooded. I'd probably recommend Cardrona as best for a family holiday. Have fun!!

The South Island (Queenstown) is probably your basically superb guess. whether it quite is totally competitve with each individual else wanting a pastime there as perfect. reliable success, think approximately an excellent time regardless. i'm jealous. it quite is between the considerable astonishing places I genuinely have ever seen.
