pc has 800 mgz cpu and 512 mb, 20 gb hdd with about 3 gb of free space, running windows xp home version 2, about 5 years old, off brand. recently added belkin 5 port usb 2.0 card and la cie 250 gb external hd, that's when problems started. pc would not auto shut off at first, had to push on/off button. would boot up to windows login, had to click profile, never had to do that before. today booted up to check disk utility which I (foolishly) skipped on the second login. All these Microsoft Money 2004 error messages popped up, window from system tray pops up I need to run check disk utility. try to get out of Microsoft Money 2004 error messages to run check disk. go to delete Microsoft Money 2004 from add/delete programs and every thing locks up, ctrl-alt-delete, no go. turn off pc with on/off switch, leave for a bit in frustration (!), try again, run check disk, get all these error messages about FAT on same area (i think), fixed by copying. then goes to cd rom error, need boot cd HELP!!

Does not look good! Shut down your computer and disconnect your external harddrive. Take CDs out of CD drives etc.

Re-Boot your PC and press the F8 button when it reboots. This will bring you to a boot menu. Select "Safe Mode". This will start windows in safe mode without any extra drivers. You should be able to run checkdisk again after Windows comes up.

See if the problem persists aftr CheckDisk is done.
You may have a defective harddisk controller or they may be an interrupt conflict between the internal harddrive controller and your external drive.

You can find out by clicking on Start - Control Panel - Double click on "System" and select the "Hardware" tab and clic on the button device manager. You should see yellow warning signs if there are conflicts.

Hope this helps!

Have you tried to go to safe mode by pressing F8 during start-up and remove Microsoft Money 2004?

Also since the problem started after you installed the USB card so try uninstalling it from Device Manager and then remove the card physically.

your computers specs wont cut it anymore.your new add on peripherals is too much for your pc to handle.may I suggest a whole new system or upgrading the CPU and RAM?If your computer is a no namer, then ram is at ur mercey.if you have an older "slot A"(AMD) or "Slot I"(Intel) cpu,ur better off going on ebay.these cpus were an experiment for a new way for people to upgrade the cpu's.It looks like a video game carterage like sega or super nintendo, and only fits in 1 way.its good for a safe way to upgrade if u dont know much, but that type of CPU isnt as directly connected to the mother board as the "flip-chip" method which is more superior today, and for now.if u upgrade ur cpu dont forget to purchase a cpu fan made for that speed, and get the fan with a heat sink attached, also if it a slot cpu,get a dual or tri fan for it with heat sink, and upgrade the ram.most u can probably upgrade to on that is 1.5-2gb(SDRAM),and there is 2 types of ram chips which is fast and faster, get the one with the most "MHZ".For SDRAM I think fastest you can do it 120MHZ,and best to get more than 1 ram chip instead of having it all on 1 chip.less stress for ur RAM chip, and also depending on your motherboard might need a certain combination of ram chips to work properly.ASUS is decent for it by the way,or just get a whole new computer but dont get IBM,Compaq,or dell. They got a chip in their motherboards so if u wanna upgrade the ram,u can only get the company ram so u cant by it anywhere else, and this is costly, and marketing scam.enjoy!

Remove your new HDD. Restart your system. While restarting press F8 to show the boot menu. Select the option "Boot with Last Good Known". This may sort out your problem

Remove the new Hard Drive. Go back to a restore point before you added the external hard drive.Restore and check to see if you have the same problem. I hope it works for you.
