Well, for a understanding I'l just give you a web sites so you read from there, because it's too much and I wouldnt have that much place and time to write down. So go to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoisomer
http://scholar.hw.ac.uk/site/chemistry/topic3.asp?outline=no
http://www.answers.com/topic/stereoisomerism
http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-72607/carbohydrate
I hope it will help!

I am not fully sure what you mean but let's try this simple thing.

suppose you have a cube with marbles in the corners. Total marble number is 8. Now you have 6 blue (B) and 2 red (R) marbles. Let's say this is a chemical compound. So the formula will be B6R2.

Now lets put the marbles in the corners. four bottom will be blue.

Now comes the tricky part. We are left with 2 blues and 2 reds.

1) lets put the blues (B) and red (R), next to each other. So top of the cube will look like this:
BB
RR
2) but we can put the marbles in a different position
BR
RB

So the "formula" for the two different arrangements is still B6R2
But we can "make" two different looking cubes.

This is called isomerism: 2 different structures witht the same amount of marbles (or atoms) and because we are taking "in space", in 3 dimensions, we called it stereoisomerism.

Now you can go and read some more....
