Location... mainly how far is it to your work, you'll drive that the most.
Location... is it in a safe neighborhood? Is there a train that runs all night near?
Location... where is your apartment going to be? You'll have to move all your belongings in, and you'll likely accumulate more stuff to move out.
Cost... 30-40% of your income is an ideal rent. Don't go cheap, you'll hate it, and don't overspend.
Space... Make sure it has enough space to comfortably live in.
Tenants... Find out what other kind of people you'll live near. You want a place that will have young professionals like yourself and not full of rowdy partiers.

your area how far from mall, lol, no for real your area is it gang infeseted how it is kept up, distance from job, distance from a bus stop just in case you have to catch one, it will mostly be your preference on your likes and dislikes, if you like stairs or not, if you like the fact that most allow pets and most dont, inside you would look at interior of course the carpet, space square footage, the sockets, the appliances what is incl and what is not, say if you have to bring your own stove, refrig, microwave, yea some places provides you with one, washer and dryer hookups, emergency escapes how far or if even present the extinquisher, how many fire alarms inside suppose to be in every room, mold in the bathrooms the showers see if there is ventilation, chipped paint, the rest is mainly to your likeing what you want and dont want. also what bills are if any included in the rent.

All those basic things like amount of space you need, your budget, driving & cost of gas or transortation or walking distance to grocery store etc. your landlord (pervert ??) pay close attention to the lease as the small print might say they can kick you out at any time, make not of all broken stuff before you move in and photo's would be good, make sure the appliances work, Read carefully. no parties, no pets, no smoking etc. & please pay attention to your neighbors to be. Are seedy looking, drug dealers, is it police patroled, a gated aprtment would be better but no gruarantee.

Check on your potential neighbors - Smoking , late parties, drugs, yelling at night, loud cars, loud music
Check security of doors and windows.
How far away is parking area? and how well lit is it?
Is there security on the premises at night?
What is the quality of your door and latch mechanism?
Check the operation of the toilet and shower
Make a detailed list of any small damage such as nail holes, carpet damaged spots, mold and peeling silicon seal etc to prtect yourself from those landlords that rip off your deposit for things that were there when you moved in,
