I watched a programme (with subtitles) in which a muslim woman was defending wearing the veil on the grounds it didn't stop her communicating with others and so, separation wasn't an issue
Unfortunately I'm hard of hearing and rely heavily on lip-reading...it was impossible for me to follow what she was saying without having it printed up on the screen.
Real life, of course, isn't like this...
It seems to me that the original reasoning behind the veil now means that it is little more than an archaic custom that has little place in muslim integration in western society and places probably 1 in 10 people 'incommunicado'
I'm happy to respect the beliefs of others, but that needs to be a 2 way street... isn't something pointless and selfish going on here?
This is a serious question as this is an issue that troubles me deeply. Sensible and thought out arguments from both sides welcomed
Thanks everybody

Okay, perhaps I rambled a bit so, the condensed question is....
Veil wearers say communication isn't a problem - I'm saying it is and that this separation is archaic and indefensible in western society.
Am I being selfish?

hmm . . . good question . . .
I would think that the woman has a right to wear a veil in general, but in some situations that right might have to be suspended. For example, job duties might require that the person not have a veil.
In general, I think that people who have a hearing disability also have rights to receive communications, especially in business and commerce situations.
For example, if the woman is a flight attendant and you were a passenger, it seems to me that your need to hear the communication takes precedence over her need to wear the veil.
However, if you were both dining in a restaurant, or sitting in a coffe shop, or attending a symphony, I think her right to wear a veil would take precedence over your right to hear what she is saying. (If, however, she wanted to talk to you at that restaurant, I think it would be a courtesy for her to remove the veil so you could read her lips).
In other words, there's a middle ground in there.

I am not qualified to fully answer this question, but please allow me to make my comments:
As I quiet my own mind and observe what is happening around me, I have noticed that people in my community and country take a very self-centered view of the world. I can understand this, because each person looks upon the world and makes their judgments of it from their own place upon it. However, people also have a way of forcing what they believe is correct or right upon others. At the very least, feeling they must comment on it.
Each culture in our world has its own unique or even similar qualities to it. Some of them make logical sense, some do not. This applies to all cultures everywhere, including ours. Sure the Veil SEEMS pointless to us, and I do not have the answer why it is or is not pointless, but I have respect for it. Just as I have respect for you and your curiosity and courage to ask this question.
Beyond this, I just do not know.

My sister posed this question.
With a veil and the body completely covered how do I know that is a woman going into the bathroom behind me?
She spun around and went right back out the door till the "woman" in the black robe came out.
My objection is that Muslims seem to treat the woman as though she is the cause of sin. They make her cover up so they don't have to worry about 'lusting" after the woman. To their thinking that is easier than having a clean mind and a respectful attitude toward women.
If the man sins by having lustful thoughts he blames the woman instead of asking God to help him see all women as if they were his sister.
Islam needs to bring its people into the 21st century. and develop a sense of bringing God into their lives instead of spending so much time chanting and kneeling it doesn't seem to be softening their hearts very much.

Well, if she can normally communicate with other people and isnt aware that you cant hear, then thats more like a self-problem. I have hearing problems myself and I often have to tell people to repeat themselves.
And I agree that there needs to be 2 way in western culture...with the exception of U.S. We're such a diverse culture that there is no 'norm' society. Maybe unconsciously we all read lips but may be more for you.
Should we all learn sign language to communicate with the near-deaf or would they need to use hearing aids.

The veil hides the marks on her face when her husband has beaten her up.
If you are not deaf, turn the music up so you can't hear the screams next door.

i'm able to assist you to! A can of 9 lives divided via 3 cats as quickly as an afternoon isn't making your cat fat. it quite is a constructive manage and a sensible volume of nutrition. Your cats are turning out to be older. substitute their dry nutrition to Purina Indoor formula interior the golf green packaging. My little porker dropped weight and had on no account appeared and acted so youthful. He enjoyed the nutrition and misplaced weight. ( it will be quite challenge-free for us :) I persisted to furnish him a small can of nutrition daily.

You are correct!
And non only some hear, most do not listen and, further, regardless of what they receive, they (we) soon either forget or our records are fading out or, worse, keep different that heard!
