I do believe he did die. He might have been shot worse in the other but this one, it was where the bullets hit.

yes hes about to get on the train with his woman and then A guy Carlito disrespected earlier in the movie pops up and blows him away

Its been along time since I've seen that movie but doesn't he get shot while getting on a train at the end of the movie ?

I am watching it right now as I write this. They never actually show him close his eyes completely and then they cut to the silhouette of a woman (presumably Gail (Penelope Ann Miller BTW)) dancing one a beach with a child & people playing drums. I think DePalma may have wanted to leave it open to interpretation. Maybe...
I would like to think that he did survive and is living a life with Gail & their child in the Bahamas renting cars to tourists. That would be ideal. Cause HEY! It s Pacino and who doesn t like Pacino?
