I've found that you can't go wrong when you get the small round melons.
For watermelons if you tap on one end it should make a thunking noise. If you see a yello spot, that indicates it's been sitting on the ground longer than normal, so it has time to ripen longer, meaning it will be sweeter and contain more water.

Rather than "knocking" on them, heft them in comparison to others in the supermarket bin.
What you're looking for is greater sense of weight for the size - why? Because a relatively heavy melon will be heavy with water weight - which means it will be juicy. A lighter melon (for its relative size) means it doesn't have as much water content - one of those dried-out melons nobody likes.
Hope that helps. Best to you.

The info about the yellow is not true.
It SHOULD have a nice solid yellow spot.
This shows it was left on the ground long enough to ripen on the vine!!

it's hard to explain and it takes practice.
you need to tap it gently with your palm and if it's ripe it should sound kind of hollow.
If it sounds too juicy, it's either still too green or over ripe.
the colour is not foolproof but normally if it is dark green with not much yellow it's a good sign

When you thump it it will not sound hollow. It should sound solid which means it's full of juice & is still good
